VholdR have recently launched their ContourHD camera which is both the world’s first, but it is also the lightest HD Helmet mountable action camera available. The ContourHD is an improvement on the original VholdR helmet camera.

Firstly the ContourHD turns on and boots up much quicker than the previous model. Along with this it has a better microphone which an improved sensitivity and dynamic range. This helps reduces wind and ambient noise allowing for the camera to pick up more important sounds, such as talking.

The new camera now allows you to record up to 8 hours of footage onto a 16GB micro SD card, compared to a previous 2GB card. The two final improvements include being able to quickly download video files of the camera and being able to play them in Quicktime. Finally, the ContourHD action camera comes with a larger assortment of mounts and an improved, more compact helmet mount. You get mounts so that you could fit the camera to your helmet, equipment, goggles or vehicle.

The ContourHD camera doesn’t require any wires, as it is a ‘self contained unit’. This is great as it means you just need to attach your camera, turn it on and go! No need to faff around plugging cables in and making sure they don’t come loose! The ContourHD only weights a bit of 100 grams, so it is nice and light!

The camera comes with two modes. You can choose HD mode, which gives you 30fps and a resolution of 1280×720 or you can opt for the standard definition, which is 848×480 with a frame rate of 60 fps. When using the camera in HD mode you should be able to record 30 min of footage for every GB of memory you have. On standard definition this doubles to 60 min per GB.

The ContourHD has a strong aluminium body and to make aligning it easy it has two lasers. These can be turned on, so you can see where the camera is pointing when you’ve got it on. It makes it really easy to check that your camera is pointing the correct way before you start filming. The lasers should help stop you getting footage that is just pointing up at the floor, or down at the ground.
